1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

1974 911 Carrera Targa Ser# 9114410023

No. 23 of 232 cars produced for the North American market

This car first came to my attention in 2007 as an abandoned project, under a tarpaulin in a carport. Little was known about the car or who had dismantled it to a rolling chassis. Fortunately all the pieces had been stored in a dry shed and mostly in Rubbermaid bins. The purchase was completed and we set out in truck with trailer to Powell River a remote coastal town in British Columbia, Canada, to load up everything and haul it back to Vancouver Island. I was unaware of the car's true identity.

I began to notice that there were some details that seemed different to the standard 1974 911. I decided to research the serial number with Porsche Cars of America. The information received in the form of the Letter of Authenticity was that it was from a limited production model of the Carrera Targa. The engine and transmission numbers were found to match. The restoration project began.

The body was further stripped down and transported to the body shop for all paint removal. Very minor corrosion was evident just the usual battery box platform. This was replaced. The doors fenders, trunk and engine lid were all prepared and painted separately along with the main body shell.

Back at the work shop the transmission rebuild and engine upgrading was underway. Time certing the block and Delivar studs installed. New cylinders and pistons, complete rebuilding of cylinder heads, cams, new rockers and shafts. Replaced chains and install hydraulic tensioners. Engine and transmission assembly installed.

Brake calipers rebuilt with new stainless steel pistons. Master cylinder replaced and new brake hoses installed. Suspension checked and wheel bearings replaced. Wiring harness installed and all electrical systems inspected and tested. Fuel system cleaned and tank serviced.

The body panels, doors, fenders, lights and horns were then installed. Window regulators and latches etc., installed into the doors.

Swatch samples of interior materials were sent off to the PCA expert for verification. The complete interior was built to exact original specifications including leather dash by Heritage Upholstery in Vancouver, BC, which included the complete rebuilding of the Targa roof. The upholstery was installed, new Dunlop tires according to build sheet.

In June of 2011 the car was put on the road and test driven for the first time.

I drove the car from Vancouver Island along the Oregon and Mendocino Coasts for the car to be displayed in the Historic Parade of Cars to honor the 911 model at the very special event held by  Porsche Club of America  at  Porsche Rennsport IV 2011 in Monterey
